Plans for a Tenterden Cinema to be submitted to Ashford Borough Council

14th Jun 2019

On Monday night (10th June), Tenterden Town Council confirmed that a pre-planning application for a new cinema in the town is to be sent to Ashford Borough Council for approval.

This is the latest step in proposals for the cinema, one of the town’s four major projects to be funded from the £3.5 million raised from council land sales. The others are the Town Hall, the Recreation Ground and access to local halls.

The pre-application will broadly outline the proposals put forward by specialist designers Burrell Foley Fischer for a two-screen digital cinema and café at The Pebbles, the 17th century building in the High Street.

Their report outlined several key criteria for a potential new cinema, including improved footfall on the High Street, and that it honoured the legacy of the building’s original owner, Alice Wood, that it should provide amenity to local residents.

The designer’s plans have received broadly supportive input from Historic England South East.
