Planning Committee considers applications for almost 400 new homes in Tenterden

8th Jan 2020

Three major planning applications, involving the creation of almost 400 new homes in Tenterden, were reviewed by the Town Council’s planning committee at its meeting on Monday, 6 January.

While the application from developers Wates for 250 houses at Limes Land, adjoining Woodchurch Road and Appledore Road, have been submitted to Ashford Borough Council, they have yet to be received by Tenterden Town Council. It is understood to run to almost 100 documents which need to be carefully considered before the consultation period elapses on 31st January 2020 (at present).

Revised proposals for Westwell Court for a 56-bed care home and 23 assisted living units will now be scheduled for discussion at the Monday, 3 February meeting of the planning committee.

Meanwhile, the committee rejected plans for 54 apartments for older residents at Smallhythe Road on 11 separate grounds, including the potential pressure on GP services; the lack of energy efficiency, environmental concerns and the absence of a firm financial commitment to support the creation of affordable homes in the town.

Following last night’s meeting, planning committee chairman Cllr John Crawford said: ”We were surprised and disappointed that the Limes Land and Westwell Court proposals were both submitted just before Christmas, effectively shortening the time we have to consider them within the consultation period.

“Nevertheless, and despite the fact that none of these proposals are in the agreed Local Plan, we will be working diligently to analyse their potential impact on the town”.
